Tony Cook

Most of my teaching career was spent in middle and primary schools. I was a deputy head for 14 years and had a period as an acting head of a large junior school.

I was a Teacher Adviser for Primary ICT in Hampshire LEA for 16 years. My main areas of work were primary software and hardware development. Special projects included working on software to support schools, and writing curriculum and software guides.

Since the formation of Gatehouse I have provided advice and support to schools embarking on the installation of new curriculum ICT systems and upgrading existing installations. I have been working with several schools to develop their web sites and upload them to the internet.
I will be continuing to provide a range of in- school training support, covering areas such as website design, digital photography, digital video and sound and ICT coordinator and school IT technician courses. I am offering services to schools who wish to convert their analogue resources into a digital media that can provide valuable ICT resources.

I am married and Sheila and I both enjoy a love of Cornwall and spend as much time as possible there and are in an advance planning stage to settle there in the not too distant future. With a children’s author and illustrator in our road, our Cornish retreat has a magic all of its own.

We have five tortoises and enjoy walking, off-roading, boating, fishing, photography and DIY.

I have been a Principal IT Consultant for over 25 years, working for some of the world’s leading software and services companies including Microsoft and Oracle, I now work as an independent consultant using my commercial experience to help educational establishments get the most out of their ICT investments.

I believe that ICT should be an enabler and not a barrier to learning.

ICT is only of use if it allows educators and pupils to be more efficient and get access to the right information.

As a chair of Governors for over 12 years I have seen how schools can benefit from well implemented, connected systems. I have personally assisted in the design and installation of the equipment and network for an Infant school which achieved the ICT mark and was a Beacon school for ICT. I have great experience of Virtual Learning Environments and implementation of networked technology into the classroom.

I am particularly passionate about the need for better awareness of Internet Safety.

Trained to Ambassador level by CEOPs (Child Exploitation and Online Protection), I am actively involved with the teaching and training of Internet Safety.

As a father of two teenage daughters I am well aware of benefits, and pitfalls, the internet can bring.

Working with schools around the country, I have so far given  talks to over 5000 pupils, teachers and parents.

Away from ICT, I am an ardent football fan and am a Chelsea season ticket holder. After watching them for over 30 years, I think I am owed the last few seasons of success!
